Science/Reef South African Champs 2008 - Day 2

30th September 2008
The Second day of the 22nd Annual Science/Reef South African Bodyboarding Championships where held today, 30 September, at Alkantsrand, in Richards Bay.

We arrived at the beach this morning to find conditions substantially bigger than the 1-2 feet that was predicted. Although the swell mostly short period windswell at least made for contestable 2-3 feet conditions.

First up was the round one heats of the Pro Division, with current SA Pro Champ, David Lee (SKZN), sneaking ahead of Sacha Specker (WP), in a fiercely fought heat. Michael "Ratt" Ostler (CKZN) won his heat convincingly, with Derek Footit (SKZN) also winning his heat. Jared Houston (WP), ripped from the word go, busting a huge air roll in the difficult conditions within the first minutes of his heat, and winning it. Stephan Roos (BOL) also ripped in his heat, managing to fend off Justin Lindsay (EP). The last pro heat was epic to watch with Alistair Taylor (SKZN), Aadam Grant (WP), Stuart Bradford (CKZN), Dylan van Tonder (EP) and Mark McCarthy (NKZN) all going head to head - Aadam and Mark both landed mad flips, but it was Alistair Taylor's consistent surfing that saw him getting second, and Stuart Bradford's mad air reverse out the bowl that saw him taking the lead.

In the Juniors, perfect 300's where had by Murray Van Vuuren (EP), Aden Kleve (WP), Bradley Moys (SKZN), Terence Peters (SKZN) Adam Waites (CKZN) and Ian Campbell (CKZN)

As the tide started getting higher the conditions became more tricky for the Drop Knee heats, with most competitors opting to surf the peak near the harbor wall, which seemed to offer longer rides. Sacha Specker (WP), surfing on his backhand, managed to narrowly beat Wayne Du Preez (CKZN). Derek Footit (SKZN) and Warren Canepa (EP) won their respective heats convincingly, and as conditions became even more windy and difficult, Sean Tickner (CKZN), fought hard just pull ahead of an on form Reinhard du Toit (NKZN).

The call was then made to run the second round of the Men's divison, with clear standouts Jonathan de Lauwere (EP), Rayner Venter (SKZN) and Murray Jones (EP) all getting perfect 300's

As the day drew to it's close the second round of the boys heats where run, determining who gets a spot in the quarter finals - check out the Science/Reef SA Champs contest page for heat sheets to see who made it!
