Stage Set for SA Champs 2008.

28th September 2008
The organisers from Northern KZN, with input from SABA, have been hard at work behind the scenes to ensure that everything is ready for competition come Monday morning 29 September. Sponsors for prizes, prize money, officials meals, print media, scaffolding and various portions of the infrastructure have been secured and every bit of equipment and printed material is ready for the siren of the first heat of the weak. All that is required at this point is for Alkantstrand to deliver some awesome conditions and for all the visiting competitors to bring their A game.

According to local sources... There will be waves on Monday, the first day of competition... This may well continue on to Day 2 with Day 3 and Day 4 (Wednesday and Thursday) being a bit on the dodgy side. Friday, the fifth and final day of the event should be good again, just in time for the semi-finals and the finals.

This last week before champs has seen good waves in the Bay with J-Bay style rights breaking off the little surfed South Pier breaking into the harbour. The swell has dropped off a lot but we may see some of it return after this weekends southerly push.

What can competitors and spectators expect besides the red hot bodyboarding action in the water?

Weather permitting there will be activities on the beach around the tower during the week. Cooling off stations, free gym trials, food availability, touch rugby tournament and a development session are on the cards. Details will be available via team captains and beach commentators.

There will be bodyboarding DVD's on screen and great daily specials at the Upperdeck Restaurant, next to the new Protea Hotel Waterfront. This will be the main hang-out spot for SA Champs, being one of the main sponsors. The SA Champs after party will also take place there with live music and other fun and games.

The organisers have also put together a handy contest booklet which each contestant will receive at the briefing. Competitors and visitors alike are urged to support the sponsors of SA Champs as well as the booklet advertisors during their stay. Support those who support bodyboarding. This is not just a catchy line! We need to live up to this to grow the sport.
