Wedge Classic - Anticipation builds as mega swell approaches

11th July 2007
Day 2 of the 4A Wedge Classic, the 4th stop on the SA bodyboarding Association national circuit, was once again favoured with rippable 3ft surf, light winds and beautiful Plettenberg Bay weather. Things are set to turn radically within the next 12 hours however as a huge storm ravaging Cape Town today charges up the coast. The storm is expected to bring swells in excess of 7m, so contestants are expecting substantially larger and heavier surf for day 3, which kicks of with round 2 of the Pro division and some of the countrys best riders taking on the oceans fury.

Standouts from day 2 included Michael Ostler (Durban) in the junior division, who was launching some big moves on the wedging peaks. Jared Houston from CapeTown and local James Jones also put on good performances, while Mossel Bays Adam Morley, winner of the first pro event this year, went down as one of the days main upsets.

In the Drop Knee division, Sacha Specker (CT) and Aden Kleve (Kommetjie, CT) were both on fire in their heats, and current SA drop knee champ Derek Footit also advanced in a closely contested heat. Wesley Fischer, winner of the last SABA event in Durban, suffered an early loss, much to the relief of his opponents.

The contest also featured a free development clinic presented by Debis Fleet Management and Wavecrest Distributors, and 22 kids from a nearby township were treated to experiencing wave riding for the first time under the tutelage of volunteer pro bodyboarders, and were also given a free lunch on the beach.

The 2007 Wedge Classic is the 11th annual running of the contest, and is proudly presented by FNB, Wave Crest Distribution, Debis Fleet Management, Robberg FineFoods, Red Bull and The Surf Shop in Plettenberg bay. The contest runs until July 14.
