Latest update on Cave Rock Gladiator Pit presented by Movement Bodyboarding Magazine and 662mob.

Well the 32 slots for the rock are all about taken up. I will be publishing the list of competitors pretty soon, but am just waiting for confirmation on who the final list will be made up of, as some entries have just been posted by phone call, and of course the real entry forms and disclaimers have to sent in still.

Just for all competitors, we'll be having a pre-contest function at the WaveHouse at Gateway on the night of April 18th at 6:00pm. It's pretty important all competitors be there as we'll be discussing formats for the event. It's also very important all you guys get your entry forms in, so I can have your cel numbers and send out SMS alerts during the window if a suitable swell is coming. So please make sure you take care of that stuff before the deadline. It's also getting to the point now of having an alternate list, as more than 32 guys have contacted me regarding entry, but at the end of the day it's going to be the guys that send in their entries of course that actually compete.

What type of format we run will also affect prize money breakdown, so I want to present a couple different formats for everyone to consider, and maybe we can vote on which one seems best. The more I have thought about it, the more I am starting to favor the Shark Island's old format, which is heats of 5 or 6 guys, about 40 minutes long. Each heat is run almost like a contest in itself, which means if wave conditions change from one heat to another, it doesn't disadvantage anyone, as the judging criteria is modified for that particular heat in the water- so basically it must be equally easy for anyone in any heat to score a 10. The other benefit is that you can run a full round with everyone getting to surf by about 11am, so conditions are still decent before too much wind comes up.
This format is also non-elimination- everyone surfs two full rounds, or about 80 minutes of heat time, and you are scored from your best 2 rides each heat, or best 4 at day's end. Your 4 wave total determines your final result. There will still be specialty prizes in each heat for the best move or barrel or whatever it is.

OK that is all the news for now- hope everyone is fit and ready, the contest is just over 2 weeks away, and cave rock has had some pretty good early winter days so far....so fingers crossed for a sick contest.
