Kumba West Coast Classic - Day 2

Simon Heale
1st May 2014

Day 2 greeted us with perfect clean 2ft lines at Farmer Burger's reef. Starting off with pro quarters, both Mark McCarthy and Tristan Roberts came out with guns blazing. Iain Campbell threw down some big clean rolls to claim his heat, while Terence Pieters just ousted Adam Morley with a technical backflip to roll combination.

Next up are the Junior semi-finals and Ethan Nel carried on with his in for run completing big clean rolls on the set waves. Brode Gleeson dominated with 3 rolls on one wave and Tristan Roberts kept moving forward by landing a big clean backflip securing his place in the junior final along with Benjy Oliver.

Pro semi-finals hit the water next. Tristan Roberts got an impressive 2 backflips and a roll on one wave. Mark McCarthy fought back with big rolls and a smooth lip reverse but it just wasn't enough to get him through. Iain Campbell got a perfect barrel to roll and had Terence Pieters on the back foot for the rest of the heat, unfortunately he just couldn't find the waves to beat Campbell. The Pro finalists are Tristan Roberts and Iain Campbell, one of these lucky men will walk away R20 000 richer!

The Development guys went out and were in their element in the perfect little waves. Victor Engel, Linnex Saal, Jackson Linnert and Gurtley Nel showed off all the skills they have been tought by throwing down rolls and nice spins and advancing through to the final. The future truly is looking bright for the Lamberts bay boys thanks to Kumba, Reef and the Boland Bodyboarding team's efforts.

Later in the afternoon all the riders went down to Elands bay for the launch of the Kumba Elands Bay Development team. Kumba have seen the potential and decided to expand their community efforts into Elands bay and grow the sport of Bodyboarding amoung the young generation. Their new kit was handed out to the selected riders and then Mark McCarthy gave a run down on the basics of bodyboarding. After that everyone was excited to hit the water, each rider with their own teacher. A huge amount of fun was had by everyone and the new Elands Bay Development team are looking forward to the next time already.

Stay tuned for more action from tomorrow!
