South African Bodyboarding Champion Returns to Defend Title

27th September 2012
South African Bodyboarding Championship
1st - 6th October 2012
Southern Kwa-Zulu Natal

With a week remaining until the most exciting event on the bodyboarding calendar, the South African Bodyboarding Championship, with around 150 entrants from the competing provinces preparing travel to Southern Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Defending SA champion Storm Prestwich will be surfing his local breaks to defend the title he claimed last year in Cape Town. Prestwich, 18 at the time of his win last year, made South African Bodyboarding history as the first person to ever win both the Junior and Pro titles in the same year!

Storm started competing in 2006 at the age of 13 and has had an exciting career so far: winning every junior event on the SA circuit in 2010 and being crowned Junior champion in that year. He faired almost as well on the circuit in 2011, winning the junior title at the Wedge Classic 2011 and finishing off the year with his epic double win at last year's SA championships. In the year since, Prestwich has had the opportunity to travel to the Canary Islands for the International Surfing Association's World Bodyboard Championship and placed a fantastic 9th place in the Junior division.

Storm is looking forward to the SA Champs and has been training hard: "I've got the hunger back and want to keep the trophy. I'm also excited for SA's to see everyone from around the country. Everyone rips and it pushes my bodyboarding."

Coming up fast from the Boys division is Tristan Roberts from Boland, who will be competing in both the Boys and Pro divisions this year!

The 5A Rated South African Championship will be a roaming event, in order to make the best of the surf conditions on each day. The daily selection will be made from Margate, Lucien, Uvongo and St Michael's Beach on the lower south coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal.
